Chrome for iOS: Not So Fast, Cool Features - winderfrouths

Google's changeable version of its Chrome browser has now proportional out of beta and is now available for the iPhone and iPad from the App Computer memory. I took information technology for a birl to see how it compares to Apple's built-in Safari browser. In legal brief, the Chrome iOS mobile web browser has some innovative features, but is hampered by the fact it can't water faucet into Apple's Nitro JavaScript engine to Hunting expedition.

Look and Feel

Chrome for iOS has a same spirit and feel to the desktop version that you know and love, so it won't look entirely foreign.

On the iPhone however, you do not have the tabs crosswise the top of the screen, but they'Re accessed through a tap on the elevation-right of the screen, which brings up your open tabs in vertically stacked cards that you can flick through.

Incoming to the omnibar (the combined URL and search block u) there's a carte clit (three horizontal lines), which allows you to bookmark pages, access the settings panel and other features.

Along the iPad, in the omnibar you also get a microphone icon for the sound search feature, so you fair-and-square speak your search.

The Chrome transportable web browser uses Google's own voice hunting, which we have seen before in the Google Look app for iOS.

Voice search is also face on the iPhone, but you will see it solitary once you tap to enter an Universal resource locator.

Motorized Tabs

Chrome for iOS has a novel way of transaction with private browse tabs, called Incognito Fashion away Google. When you open a new Incognito tab key, Chromium-plate basically creates other stack of tabs that Doctor of Osteopathy not track your browsing history, while you can browse normally adjacent in other tabs.

On the iPad there's a little switch at the clear, while on the iPhone you perplex two rows of stacked tabs, normal and snobbish. You bum also swap between open tabs on the iPad by swiping from the edge in of the screen, while connected the iPhone you just drag from the edge of the screen to switch tabs and you swipe to close any chit from the peck view. This worked really well in my tests.

Synching Tabs Across Devices, Platforms

One exceedingly useful feature along Chromium-plate for iOS is that if you check in with your Google account – and use Chromium-plate for background – you can transference all your open tabs from one gimmick to other, thusly you can continue reading whatever you were connected your reckoner. These commode beryllium accessed from a brochure ikon with two arrows along IT, which appears once you check in to the Service. iOS 6 will have a similar feature when IT arrives this fall, called iCloud Tabs, but this means you will have to manipulation Safari along the desktop too.

To access your tabs from desktop Chrome on iOS, sign in with your Google story happening your PC (Settings/Sign In to Chrome), and along iPhone/iPad when prompted after you install the app (or Menu/Other Devices). Then you can access whatsoever tabs you rich person open on the desktop via Menu/Other Devices, and a list of open tabs is displayed. Beg along whatsoever of them and you're through with.

Safari is Still Faster

Chrome for iOS might be a usable browser if you use it on your desktop already, but don't pelt along into intellection it could become your default browser on iOS. The reason is that Chrome is slower — and give notice't be faster – than Safari. This is because Malus pumila is restricting the use of its Nitro JavaScript engine to Safari, spell unusual apps don't consume access to it.

Because of this, Chrome along iOS is slenderly slower than Safari, although non by a big difference connected the third-gen iPad and iPhone 4S I tested it on. But until iOS 6 arrives with its tabs cloud sync root, Chromium-plate is your best bet to start your tabs synced across devices for mobile browsing sanity.
