Decorating Christmas Tree With Nature Nativity
One of the things that I have been meaning to explore with my children now that they are a little older is using a hot glue gun. I tried a cool glue gun with them when they were much younger but the glue never really worked and the pieces fell apart. However, they are both more responsible now and at 5 and 7 we use many different tools like sewing machines and wood working tools with supervision. So today I'm sharing with you a Nativity Tree Decoration that kids can make ideal for making after reading our favourite version of the Nativity Story The Christmas Story by Ian Beck which with beautiful illustrations and ideal as a gift for young children that they will enjoy for a while to come.
There are so many examples of these ornaments – this tutorial from Missy Dear was one that caught my eye because it was slightly different but you can also find lots of examples on Etsy – like these burlap ones. For my kids I wanted something simple that they could make quickly to decorate the tree this year.
If you are following along with Rainy Day Mum you will have seen this week's Storybook Advent posts are all on The Nativity, we have a Felt Nativity Board Set that you can make, Gift of the Magi Playdough, Nativity Set Shadow Puppets and there is still 3 more activities to come this week. It's not too late to join in you can click on the image below and then each day in the lead up to Christmas you will get a short email from me with the day's activity on meaning you will not miss any of them.

Materials needed to make these DIY Nativity Tree Decorations
2 Traditional Wooden Clothes Pegs
1 Baby Peg Person
Hessian Material
Hot Glue Gun
Ribbon
Step by Step to making these DIY Nativity Tree Decorations
You will have to excuse the fact that my kids aren't in the tutorial pictures – because of the use of the hot glue gun throughout I supervised their making and then redid a 3rd decoration for the tutorial myself.
Cut a piece of the Hessian Material into a small rectangle enough to swaddle the baby peg doll.
Fold the fabric around the baby and glue the fold in place.
Place a dab of glue on the head and press down the fabric to hold it in place.
Add a little glue to the back of the baby and press the fabric in place there again.
Placing the two wooden clothes pegs together add a little glue down each of the sides. I like the way that T decided that Joseph should have legs and Mary not as she would have worn a dress and him trousers.
Once the two dolls are stuck glue a line where the baby will sit on Mary and Joseph.
Place the Baby Jesus in place and let the glue set.
There are different ways that you can hang the ornaments – check out how we hung the Nutcracker Peg Dolls that we made last Christmas. This time however, we decided to use a piece of ribbon and glue it in a hanging loop behind Mary and Joseph. This would mean that the ornament would hang straight on the tree.
So turn over the ornament and on the back of Mary and Joseph at approximately the same height glue a line. Press the ribbon in place.
Now if you don't do this bit your ornament will hang funny – so put a blob of glue onto the head of each of them and press the ribbon in place – NOW the ornament will hang straight and can be placed on a branch of your Christmas Tree.
